Cutting Carbon Fiberon a 3 axis CNC

Hello Everyone, I'm new to CNC's and carbon fiber.

Was wondering if anyone could help point me in the right direction for learning how to cut Carbon Fiber on a 3 axis CNC and what cutters would be the best for this type of application.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check out precisebits, diamondcut fishtail bits are what you want for cutting carbon.
Relatively slow cutting speeds, I don't have g-wizard here at work to check the speeds can't remember off the top of my head

guys quick question on the same thread.
first I am assuming the bit your referring to is this type. I use them for G10 fiberglass so I assume its the same.

Second question.
Should Carbon Fiber be cut in a water bath to minimize the dust as I know its a Carcinogen

Some of the guys in my Drone club have discovered I have a CNC device and have cut G10 and are all excited about the possibility of getting Carbon fiber cut. lol

Have also looking for info about just cutting in carbon fibre. But can't find any good source to information. So for me it has been try and error.
I have run my 3 axis machine in up to 6 mm thick solid carbon fibre for a while now.
I don't know for shore if it's right but I run my router on max rpm 29.000 on a 2 mm carbide router, cutting speed is 250-300 mm/min in solid carbon. And in thin sandwich I increased the speed up to 350-450 mm/min.
Strongly recommend you to use a good ventilation near the cutting place. The epoxy vapour is not nice to bread in.

The type of cutter will depend on the type of laminate you are cutting/trimming and how. There are specialist tools that have both up and down cutting sections that are meant for trimming CFRP, but they tend to be very expensive. Plus side is they cause much less damage/delamiantion with proper part support. There are ones that have a diamond pattern cutting edge that are typically advertised as being for GFRP but work fine on carbon as long as you're not too worried about damage. Where we want to minimise damage (normally for experimental testing coupons) we go to waterjet or diamond coated abrassive disk with a specialist wet saw.

Assuming you're using an epoxy matrix in your CFRP; post cure the panel before cutting to reduce damage created in the part and to help prevent the tool clogging.

PS there is a book called machining of polymer composite by Ahmad that provides a pretty good background, but its not really a practical guide as to the machining of composites. Its mainly focused on research/machines with spindle that are limited (I'm assuming) to the 6K rpm mark. However, the likes of Boeing and Airbus run spindles far faster than this (and we run a 24K spindle for this reason).

Can you provide a source for the information that carbon is carcinogenic?I think you may have been misinformed as I understand that carbon is used to repair damaged ligaments and tendons in humans and I wouldn't expect the medical profession to use something harmful.

Onsrud has an entire catalog of router bits for CF. Believe it or not I've had good results using the super cheap carbide tipped router bits you will see in hardware stores.
