Finally spent some time over the last two days running two new circuits from the panel into the rec room for the CNC table.. One 20A circuit for the Table, and another to power the vacuum and the router...

So, four months later, I am finally able to get rid of the 10/3 extension cord that's been running across the house... Still have to do the taping, texturing and painting of where I had to open the wall to install the box, but at least it's re-insulated and closed up...

Glad that's over! Now I don't have to curse at that cord every time I want to mop the floor...

Now we'll see how long it takes me to get around to doing the taping, etc..

I really need to rebuild those gantry supports in aluminum soon... I've pretty much determined that they are allowing just a slight shift from perpendicular of the router, and that's what's causing the cut marks when pocketing...

    Soon...

I need to add another home switch on the X axis, so that each rail has it's own adjustable home switch... But I'm out of inputs on the parallel port...

I guess this means I need to add a second port... Is this a pain to configure 'after the fact?'

Will I need to worry about opto isolating the input or anything like that?.. I mean, I'll just be hooking up the switch to one input and the other side to a ground input...

Also, I need to use the half height cards on my PC.. is there anything I should look for or steer away from while shopping on eBay, Amazon, etc.?

Are there any cheapo breakout boards out there designed just for ins and outs so that I don't have to build my own cable/connector assy?

First off Mark, I blame you for blowing like 5 hours today reading this entire thread. AWESOME stuff.

I am hoping you might post some more information/drawings of your vacuum box. I am getting ready to build a box for my vacuum in the base of my router table and would love some more info on what you did to make it more quiet.

    Thanks,
    Curtis

Too much work to take the vac chamber apart right now for pictures.. but I'll try and put a drawing together soon to explain it all.. Eventually, I want to turn it into an additional work platform (probably for gluing), so at that point I'll take some pictures...

I also need to post some pictures of my new hold down system (based on Gerry's), that I'm extremely happy with....

So, I plumbed my router today..

Used a bent piece of 1/4" rod...

What a PITA! Get it close front to back, but then it needs to be plumbed left to right.. then the front to back needs adjusting again.. Oops. left to right again.. Each time taking the router out, bent over all weird, back aching, trying to hole the square, and the ratchet and all that... Needed four hands and three arms...

But I think I got it pretty close, appears to be pretty dead nuts in the Y axis, and is out about .020 over 16" (8" rod extension after the bend) now on the X axis, where it was almost .190 before.... So I figure that translates to an error of less than .0005 on a 1" router bit... Where it was probably 5 thousandths or so before....

Gonna resurface the table tomorrow and see what happens... Hope to be cutting the discs for my sander drum tomorrow afternoon...

I have a question if everything is square and plumb to the machine but if the floor is not level like most garages will this affect the milling?

Shouldn't, as long as your machine is rigid..
You're going to surface your spoil board with the machine.. so it will be flat to itself.. But the router needs to be plumb to the surface (Z axis), or you're gonna get ridges....

for what its worth, issue 223 of Fine Woodworking had a "sanding station bench" that had a neat way to tuck a shop vac and cyclonic separator under it. The idea being to cut down on the noise and keep it convenient. One could access the online article by signing up to the 14 day free trial..or drop by the newsagent/magazine shop.

Sounds kinda like what I'm doing..

I did take some pictures this weekend when I had it open to clean out the filter.. Cutting MDF does allow some fine dust to get in.. enough to clog up the filter some... So I'm now in the habit of blowing out the filter after finishing an MDF project....

I'll post them soon.. maybe later today..

For now, I have 18" of fresh snow to deal with... Shoveling is the order of the day, and probably at least tomorrows...

Send some this way. We had 2 inches Friday, but it's 50° right now. I haven't even used a shovel yet this year. Normally we'd have had a couple of 4-6" snowfalls by now.

Default material usage for carving or sandblasting

There is a product out called sign foam. It comes in 1" and 1 1/2" thicknesses and is available in 4ft. X 8Ft. and 4ft. X 10Ft. Sheets. Its has superior quality for exterior use and is easy to work with. Check your local sign supplier for it and it is a great replacement for redwood and cedar.
